Feeling lost in your life is not a fun place to be. It can be draining going around in circles in your head thinking you're supposed to have more clarity than you currently have or that you are running out of time to figure out what you 'should' be doing with your life.
Alternatively, having a sense of purpose can be very empowering. It can provide direction, be a source of inspiration in your life and provide the required motivation to overcome set backs and remain resilient during hard times.
At the same time, the thought of identifying a purpose for your life can be overwhelming as it can seem to require some kind of unattainable wisdom or clairvoyance.
However, I have found that life leaves clues if you know where to look. Here are some tips to help you find your way.
Follow your passion
What do you enjoy? What do you look forward to with eager anticipation? Maybe it's spending time with close friends, reading a good book, exploring nature, or being physically active. If you like it and want to do more of it, that's a great sign you're on the right track.
Identify your strengths
What are your special talents? What activities engage and energize you? At the intersection of what you enjoy and what you excel at are your strengths. These are powerful forces that will assist you in making your unique impact.
Warning: It can be easy to assume that what comes so naturally to you must mean it is also easy for everyone else but this is a common mistake. Whether it's listening, seeing the bright side of a situation, or being flexible and open to change, resist the urge to take your talents for granted. Not everyone with two ears knows how to use them. Many people struggle to find hope and opportunity when faced with disappointment. And plenty of others cling oh so tightly to stability, structure and certainty.
Get clear on your core values
What do you most value? What moves you emotionally? The things we feel most strongly about are good indicators of our core values. Honesty, reliability, justice, love - whatever your core values might be, it's when you live aligned with them that you will feel most satisfied. Take the time to identify what your core values are so that you can start to make choices that take them into account.
Be of service to someone else
Who do you want to help? What do you want to do for them? Meaning is often derived from contributing to others or to society in a bigger way.
Whether it's your family, a charity, a colleague, or a stranger, being of service to others is a great way to find your way. You will feel empowered from having added value through helping someone else and each experience will provide additional clues to your passions, strengths and values.
