Be seen as a leader

If you want to boost the likelihood that you will be seen as a leader in a newly formed team, the first impression you make is important.

Before your first meeting with the team, take a few minutes to write down a few paragraphs describing either:

  • your ambitions and what you hope to achieve in life

  • an incident in which you had power over another person

  • a time when you felt excited and joyful.

This activity will help put you in the right mindset to make a powerful first impression.  Research has shown that people who have primed themselves in this way are rated by the other members of the group as being more proactive and of higher status - a person they want to follow.
